Have you sent YOUR climate care package to Copenhagen?

We urgently need your help in the lead up to the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen this December.

We're trying to get as many people as we can to send a virtual package to the conference. Each package contains our demands and, if you have time, a brilliant slogan -- to be delivered by a quirky cardboard cartoon character with YOUR face on it. The best slogan will appear on a Greenpeace banner and the characters will be part of a virtual video march.  The more we have the better:

The Climate Summit will see over 15,000 officials from 200 countries gather in Copenhagen with 1 goal: to agree on a deal to combat global warming. This is a truly incredible event which has the power to mark a U-turn away from decades of inaction on climate change. That's why we want to make sure they not only agree on a deal, but make a firm pact for change that packages together 3 clear actions:

* Big cuts in emissions from rich countries
* A fund to save our forests
* Funds to help developing countries deal with climate change

Please, help us make sure their solution truly delivers. Visit
www.action-pact.org and send your message.

Let's make sure our political leaders know we want them thinking about the next generation, not just the next election.

Urgent Action: Blasting has started on Coal River Mountain

Dear --,

Coal River Mountain is in danger and the Coal River Valley community needs your help. We have heard from our allies in the coalfields that a subsidiary of Massey Energy, the largest coal producer in Appalachia, has resumed mountaintop removal operations at Coal River Mountain.
Please call the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today to help stop Massey Energy from destroying Coal River Mountain and our clean energy future.

There are two reasons for you to take action to save Coal River Mountain. First, and foremost, the lives of the people living near the blasting are in danger. The blast site is near a sludge impoundment dam, Brushy Fork, that holds back approximately 8.2 billion gallons of coal waste. Were that impoundment to fail, as many have in the past, it could flood the Coal River Valley and threaten the lives of at least 1000 residents within minutes.

The second reason you should help save Coal River Mountain is that this mountain represents the frontier for our clean energy future. Studies have shown that, if left intact, the ridges on Coal River Mountain have Class 7 wind potential - the best there is. Research by the Coal River Wind Project has shown that a wind farm on top of the mountain could generate approximately 1.2% of West Virginia's total energy needs and create hundreds of permanent jobs in the area, while also generating long-term tax revenue.

The most important thing you can do to help the people in Coal River Valley and protect our clean energy future is to
call EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and ask her to protect Coal River Mountain today.

Last Monday, seven youth were arrested in an effort to support residents of the Coal River Valley when they delivered a letter and personally asked West Virginia's Governor Manchin to revoke Massey's permit to blast on Coal River Mountain. Manchin declined, saying "What we're trying to do is find a balance, and that's tough to do in an extractive state." Governor Manchin and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection have made clear that they are not interested in stopping Massey from destroying Coal River Mountain and its potential for renewable energy development. It's time for the US EPA to intervene.

Please take action and ask the EPA to intervene at Coal River Mountain, and investigate the safety of the massive Brushy Fork coal waste impoundment:

Thanks for all you do.

For the mountains,

Petition to protect Fisher River Cree Nation's traditional territory

http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2463/t/1659/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=24304

Protect Fisher Bay forever

The Fisher Bay Park Reserve, on the west side of Lake Winnipeg, is a treasure house of boreal forest that includes lush mainland, spectacular islands, sandy beach shorelines, shoals and reefs, and the water of the bay.

This is Fisher River Cree Nations traditional territory and home to moose, black bear, pelicans, eagles, and ducks.

Furthermore, the area's little-used beaches provide suitable grounds for the Piping Plover, a highly endangered shorebird, to lay its eggs.

To conserve the environment and support a sustainable local tourism economy, Fisher River Cree Nation has requested establishment of a provincial park that secures the area from industrial activities such as logging and mining.

Fisher River Cree Nation is proposing boundaries for the park based on ecological and cultural analysis.

Please sign the petition at

Thank you!
