Parole Appeal

Eric Seitz filed an appeal of the August parole decision with the U.S. Parole Commission months ago. Concerned that the decision was taking more time than is usual, Attorney Seitz recently called the Commission. The Commission claimed to have never received the appeal!

There is a time limit for filing an appeal of a parole decision. Failure to file within the required period of time is considered a waiver of appeal, which is not Leonard's intention.

Seitz immediately sent another set of materials to the Parole Commission together with proof of delivery of the original set.

As of several days ago, the Parole Commission confirmed receipt and also acknowledged they were at fault for "losing" the original set of materials. Therefore, Leonard's appeal of the parole decision will go forward. The Commission's final decision is expected soon.

Any operating unit within the U.S. Department of Justice would lose its head if not attached, it seems. The prison infirmary at USP-Lewisburg recently "lost" x-rays taken when Leonard received "care" for a head laceration sustained when he slipped and fell on some ice. A second set of x-rays was taken, doubling Leonard's exposure to radiation. His symptoms blurred vision, for example have not yet been fully addressed.

We'll keep you posted.

Ecuador: Chernobyl in the Amazon

Date: Thu, 04 Feb 2010 21:19:30 -0500
From: "Luis Morago - Avaaz.org"
avaaz@avaaz.org
Subject: Chernobyl in the Amazon

Dear friends,

[]

Oil giant Chevron faces losing a historic lawsuit on its dumping of toxic waste in the Amazon -- let's help the people of the rainforest win in the court of public opinion and before the law, by pressing Chevron's new CEO to clean up this mess and stop Chevron's dirty lobbying:

The final judgment is imminent after a long legal battle between oil giant Chevron and brave indigenous peoples of the Ecuadorian Amazon, who are seeking redress for the multinational's dumping of billions of gallons of toxic waste in the rainforest.

If Chevron is forced to pay billions in damages, it'll be a big step forward in bringing the world's polluters to account. Staring defeat in the face, the oil giant has launched an aggressive last-ditch lobbying campaign to derail the lawsuit.

But Chevron's newly-appointed CEO, John Watson, knows his corporation's brand is under fire and is growing anxious about the risks of a public shaming campaign -- so let's turn up the heat! Sign the petition calling on Watson and Chevron to clean up their mess in Ecuador, and it will be delivered to them, their shareholders and the US media -- click below to take action now:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/chevron_toxic_legacy_3/

Over the years, civic action like this has helped to transform the policies of some of the world's biggest corporations. But most oil and gas multinationals spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year on lobbying and PR to reshape climate and energy policies and deny their environmental and human rights duties -- and Chevron is one of the biggest offenders.

From 1964 to 1990, Chevron-owned Texaco deliberately dumped billions of gallons of toxic waste from their oil fields in Ecuador's Amazon -- then pulled out without properly cleaning up the pollution they caused. Facing imminent defeat in the courts, Chevron has turned to legal machinations, powerful public relations firms and lobbyists to intimidate its critics into silence and avoid responsibility for the massive environmental and human disaster it has triggered.

Chevron has repeatedly vowed to refuse to pay for a clean up even if ordered to by the court, saying "We will fight this until hell freezes over. And then we'll fight it out on the ice." Its latest strategy: pushing the US government to bully Ecuador into burying the case.

We cannot sit back and watch Chevron make a mockery of justice like this -- let's build a critical mass of support and help the rainforest inhabitants win this round, in the court of public opinion and before the law. Click here to sign the petition and help deliver a deafening message personally to Chevron's new chief executive John Watson:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/chevron_toxic_legacy_3/

Citizens in Ecuador and around the world are joining efforts to stand up to one of the biggest and dirtiest corporations in the world. If we win, it'll be another big step toward a future of corporate accountability, human rights and environmental protection. Let's add our voices and spread the word today!

With hope and determination,

Luis, Paula, Benjamin, Pascal, Paul, Alice, Ricken, Graziela and the whole Avaaz team

Women in Burkina Faso: Giving life, risking death

Date: Wed, 03 Feb 2010 16:36:49 -0800
Subject: Giving life, risking death
From: "Amnesty International USA" alerts@takeaction.amnestyusa.org

[]
Safiatou has the right to a safe birth. She died on the back of a borrowed motorcycle on the way to a clinic. Her death was preventable.

Stand up for the women of Burkina Faso. Defend their right to maternal health care.

Dear --,

Two simple things might have saved Safiatou's life - information and transportation. But she was poor and pregnant in Burkina Faso, which put her life at risk.

According to a nurse who saw her days before she died, Safiatou had no prenatal care and suffered from anemia. She didn't even know that iron supplements were important and that the local clinic gave the pills to pregnant women free of charge.

Safiatou gave birth at home without the help of a trained birth attendant. After her delivery she hemorrhaged badly and required emergency care.

With no way to get to the health center, her husband borrowed a motorcycle, but it had no fuel.
He had to push the motorcycle 10 km to get gas.

Safiatou died on the back of the motorcycle before she even got to the health center.

Speak up for the mothers of Burkina Faso. Pressure the government to act now.

Maternal mortality is a seething crisis in Burkina Faso. More than 2,000 women die each year in this West African country from complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

Our new report, Giving Life, Risking Death - Maternal Mortality in Burkina Faso1, exposes the persistent, harsh reality faced by Burkinabe women like Safiatou. Its findings fuel our calls on the government to make immediate changes to ensure the rights of women.

We ask the government of Burkina Faso to:
* allocate care equitably, prioritizing the poorest regions with the worst rates of maternal death
* lift the obstacles -- including financial, geographic and quality barriers -- that block poor, rural women from accessing life-saving obstetric care

We know that improved care for women in Burkina Faso is possible. We've seen the success the launch of our first West African maternal mortality campaign had in Sierra Leone. Our efforts there attracted national attention and forced a positive response from authorities.

So to begin building that same momentum for change on the ground, we recently kicked off a caravan tour in Burkina Faso - mobilizing local partners to advocate at the national level. So far, the signs from Burkinabe officials have been encouraging. But we need to make sure Burkina Faso moves off the mark, to respect, protect and fulfill the human right to health care.

Safiatou's death was preventable and a violation of her human rights. Demand dignity for the girls and women of Burkina Faso.

Together we can help stop these tragic deaths.

Thank you for taking action today,

War on Wolves Gets Uglier

Send a Wolf-Saving Message to Call off the Guns!
A record 402 wolves were killed last year in Montana and Idaho.

Powerful adversaries have lined up against the wolves of the Northern Rockies. Speak out and show the Interior Secretary that you care about wolves!

* * *

Dear --,

The war on wolves is getting uglier by the day.

It's tragic enough that a record 402 wolves were killed last year in Idaho and Montana after their removal from the endangered species list -- an astronomical level that amounts to one-third of the entire wolf population in those two states.

But what saddens me almost as much are the barbaric tactics that wolf-haters have been employing lately.

For example, on Christmas Eve, Idaho wolf supporter Lynne Stone received a threatening email from a wolf hater there. The email only said "Merry Cristmas" (spelled without the "h") and included a morbid photo of a bloodied dead wolf in the back of a pickup truck.

This disturbing photo and sinister email remind us of what wolves and their supporters are up against -- and
why we need you to speak out now against the savage slaughter of wolves.

Even if you've recently signed other wolf petitions, please sign our new message to Interior Secretary Salazar because it's only getting worse for wolves.

Here are a few shocking examples of how ugly the situation has become:

Just a few weeks ago, a Wolf/Coyote/Predator Killing Derby was held in Idaho, where prizes were given away for shooting the most animals. Participants were told in advance they'd be able to use "wolf distress calls" to attract nearby wolves to the rifle range.

Outraged by this blatant example of animal cruelty?
Take action now and sign our new Citizen's Petition.

And as we showed you a while back, a sickening sign outside an Idaho restaurant proclaimed, "Tag a Wolf. Get a Free Pizza and Pitcher of Beer."

Angry that wolf-killing is being promoted in such a cavalier way?
Fire off a wolf-saving email petition now to demand federal protections for wolves.

Many wolf packs have been decimated. A majority of Idaho's Basin Butte pack, a favorite of wolf-watchers, was wiped out, seven of them by government agents firing from a helicopter or airplane. The remaining members of Montana's Sage Creek pack were also killed by aerial gunners. Four of the 10 wolves in Yellowstone Park's much-studied Cottonwood Creek pack were killed when they ventured out of the park's boundaries. And government agents have recently been authorized to destroy several packs in Montana.

This disastrous open season on wolves has reversed so much of our hard-won progress over the past several years.
Tell Interior Secretary Salazar to put wolves back on the endangered species list where they belong.

Over the next critical months, NRDC will be facing off in federal court against Interior Secretary Salazar over the fate of the wolf.

But legal action is just one important tactic. Public action is another. That's why we're urging you to
show the Interior Secretary that you care about wolves.

Powerful government agencies and a vocal minority of hunters and ranchers have lined up against the wolves of the Northern Rockies. But the wolves have you. It's urgent that you stand with us now.

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke
President
Natural Resources Defense Council

Greetings From Leonard Peltier - 02/02/10

From: contact@whoisleonardpeltier.info
Subject: Greetings From Leonard Peltier February 2010
Date: Tue,  2 Feb 2010 09:36:10 -0800 (PST)

Greetings from the Iron House. It has come to my attention that a rumor has been circulating about my death. Sorry to disappoint the Trimbachs, Ed Wood, and all the other vermin, but I am still alive and kicking. I continue to struggle for the truth about my case-much of it hidden in the over 6,000 documents they are afraid to release-to see the light of day.

I have been monitoring the case with the Crow Creek tribe's land issues, and have been asked my opinion. As in nearly all things, I come down on the side of the tribe. Sovereignty and self determination are the lynchpins to Indian freedom. I want the people of Crow Creek to know they have my fullest support in their endeavors. This case affects all Indians, and should matter to all people of conscience. Everyone should monitor this case to its fullest conclusion, and know it is yet another example of Indian people's daily reality. The Indian wars are not over; they just are fought more in the courtrooms and the boardrooms these days. But the issues are mostly the same-the land, resources, and freedom. Freedom to think. Freedom to live as we wish. Freedom to be who we are. Don't for a second allow yourself to think that the conspirators aren't working. They're out there, and as always they're plotting ways to dispossess and marginalize Indian people at every opportunity.

We were all sad to learn of the passing this past week, of Howard Zinn. A brilliant author, researcher, activist, not to mention a fine human being and a friend to my cause, his loss is a blow to all of us who struggle against oppression. Please send up prayers for his family and loved ones, and that his spirit has a good journey.

As always, a big thank you to my family and everyone else helping out at the office, and all my supporters' world wide. Through your efforts, one day we'll win my freedom.

In the Spirit of Crazy Horse,

Leonard Peltier
