Dear --,

Over the last 25 years, RAN and its members have transformed the policies of some of America's most powerful corporations, from Home Depot to Citigroup to Goldman Sachs. Our latest campaign is focused on transforming one of the biggest, most destructive oil companies in the world - Chevron.

For more than two decades, Chevron's predecessor Texaco contaminated the rainforests of Ecuador, and then pulled out without properly cleaning up the billions of gallons of oil pollution they caused. By purchasing Texaco, Chevron legally assumed responsibility for the devastation, but are now doing everything possible to deny, derail and deceive the public about their responsibility.

We need your help. Tell Chevron's new CEO John Watson to clean up Ecuador:
http://ga3.org/campaign/chevron_watson

The Facts

* 18.5 billion gallons of oil sludge were deliberately dumped into the rainforest by Chevron-owned Texaco

* Hundreds of toxic waste pits are scattered throughout the Ecuadorean Amazon, resulting in one of the largest environmental disasters in history

* Chevron's toxic sludge continues to contaminate the soil and water, causing birth defects, cancer, and death in Ecuadorean communities, as well as decimation of wildlife and essential food sources

* Regarding the $27.3 billion cleanup, Chevron stated, "We're going to fight this until hell freezes over. And then we'll fight it out on the ice."

Rainforest Action Network is calling on Chevron to clean up Ecuador and adopt robust environmental and human rights policies so that what is happening to the Ecuadorean people can never happen again.
Chevron is our biggest challenge yet. To succeed, we need you.

Unite with RAN, Amazon Watch, teachers, students, faith leaders, investors and the Ecuadorean people, in standing up to one of the biggest, nastiest corporations in the world.

Tell Chevron's new CEO that energy shouldn't cost lives: http://ga3.org/campaign/chevron_watson

Together, we can change Chevron.

New Year 2010 Message from the LPDOC

From: contact@whoisleonardpeltier.info
Subject: New Year 2010 Message from Betty Ann Peltier-Solano
Date: Wed, 27 Jan 2010 13:12:17 -0800 (PST)

Dear Friends and Supporters,

First, we've received calls in recent days about an obituary some of you have seen on the Internet. This obituary was for another man named Leonard Peltier, not my brother. I can well imagine the grief that man's family and friends must feel, as well as the shock some of you experienced when you read the notice. Thank you to those of you who called and expressed your concern.

If you have questions about things you see announced on the Internet, we recommend that you first check our blog for confirmation. There's a link to the blog from our home page at
www.whoisleonardpeltier.info or you can go directly to http://lpdoc.blogspot.com. We will always make any major announcements -- good or bad -- on our blog and/or via our mailing list. If you know people who haven't joined our mailing list, tell them that they can do so from our home page.

I recently returned from Washington, DC, and a conference with some legal team members. Ten of us met all one day to discuss issues and develop various strategies. You'll be informed of various actions/plans when it's appropriate for us to do so, but I want to tell you that I have more hope in my heart than ever before. I also know there's a great deal of work to be done in 2010 to secure Leonard's freedom. Success will not be quick or easy, and there may be disappointments along the way, but we must and will continue the fight to free Leonard. I ask everyone to expend the same energy as you did in 2009 towards that end. We simply can't succeed without you.

The first submissions for the ZOOM IN Campaign will be mailed to Attorney General Holder around February 6, the date that marks 34 years of imprisonment for Leonard. 34 years! Due to requests received from organizers who wish to use their February 6th events to collect more photos/flyers, we'll send a second package to AG Holder on March 1. For background and instructions, see
www.whoisleonardpeltier.info/zoom1.htm. Demand an Executive Review of the Peltier case.

Through letters to the editor of your local newspaper, calling in to local radio talk shows, tabling at local events, leafleting on your city streets, etc., you can have an impact on the attitudes of people in your community. More than that, you can motivate those people to get active in the campaign to free Leonard. Get a couple of your friends together and establish a LP-DOC support branch in your community today. Send an e-mail to
contact@whoisleonardpeltier.info to get started.

We're pleased to announce the availability of Giclée Reproductions of never-before-seen paintings by Leonard Peltier. These are high quality ink-jet prints using fade-resistant "archival" inks. Commonly found in museums and art and photographic galleries, they are simply the best quality reproductions available. They look just like the originals, but are available at a fraction of the cost. We invite you to visit
leonardpeltierart.com for details. For more information, contact Monica Martinez Donovan by e-mail at
Monica15@q.com or call 719-687-8750. Proceeds will benefit my brother's legal fund.

Like many similar organizations, we're still facing a funding shortfall. To carry out our plans for 2010, we need your help. We currently have two raffles for which you can purchase tickets. Enter to win a painting (
http://lpdoc.blogspot.com/2009/11/new-raffle-peltier-original-painting.html ) by Leonard Peltier OR a hand-crafted flute ( http://lpdoc.blogspot.com/2009/11/raffle.html) by gifted artist Leslie C. Thunder Hawk.

Donations are always welcome and very appreciated. Please make a pledge of support at
www.whoisleonardpeltier.info/donate.htm. Donations may also be made by check or money order made payable to the LP-DOC. Mail your donation to LP-DOC, PO Box 7488, Fargo, ND 58106.

Again, thank you for all you do on Leonard's behalf. Together, we'll make 2010 count.

Warning: General Mills Destroys Rainforests

Tell General Mills to stop using palm oil that causes rainforest destruction.

Dear ---,

Yes. It's true. General Mills, makers of some of America's favorite cereals and snacks, uses palm oil from plantations that destroy huge tracts of rainforests in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. Palm oil is a common ingredient in General Mills brands and products, from Betty Crocker and Pillsbury to Nature Valley Granola Bars and Yogurt Burst Cheerios.

Tell General Mills to clean up its palm oil supply chain and make a commitment to source only socially and environmentally responsible palm oil:
http://ga3.org/campaign/generalmills

The Facts on General Mills and Palm Oil
* Palm oil for General Mills products is causing valuable rainforests to be burned and cleared away
* Indonesia's government plans to convert up to 18 million hectares of land into palm oil plantations by 2020
* More than 20 million of Indonesia's Indigenous and forest-dependent people are at risk due to palm oil expansion
* Endangered species-including orangutans, Sumatran tigers and elephants-are at risk from palm oil expansion
* Indonesia is the 3rd largest greenhouse gas polluter, behind China and the U.S.
*Deforestation causes 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions

While General Mills has expressed concern about recent reports of rainforest destruction for palm oil and has begun to engage its suppliers, this leading company must take stronger action to ensure the protection of rainforests, communities and the climate, as other companies have already done. RAN has asked General Mills to stop this destruction by only sourcing socially and environmentally responsible palm oil, but they need to hear from you.

Send a letter to Kendall Powell, the CEO of General Mills, and let him know that you don't want rainforest destruction caused by the General Mills products you buy:
http://ga3.org/campaign/generalmills

Thanks so much for helping to set General Mills straight!

For the forests,
Ashley Schaeffer

Help Haiti - Tell Global Creditors to Drop the Debt

Let's help Haiti rebuild.

Dear ---,

After the injured are treated, the dead buried and the survivors fed, clothed and sheltered, Haiti must rebuild. As this country faces the challenge of starting over -- and building homes, neighborhoods and infrastructure that can withstand future earthquakes -- the last thing Haiti will need is to be saddled with debt.

Let's get the IMF, World Bank and other global creditors to cancel Haiti's $1 billion international debt >>
www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/196437118?z00m=19821362

Several countries, including the United States, have forgiven Haiti's past debts and now only give assistance in the form of grants. But we need Haiti's other creditors -- the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank and countries like Taiwan and Venezuela -- to do the same.

Haiti needs an international effort to make sure that, as it begins the long road to recovery, it is not burdened with unpayable debts. We must also be vigilant that any new aid from the IMF and other sources doesn't come in the form of loans that would create new debt for Haiti.

Please sign the petition and urge international creditors to free Haiti from debt >>

Thank you for taking action,
